Most of the time when you want to know what a word means, one quick browse through the internet will give you the Merriam Webster definition—OKAY, sometimes you’re better off just hitting up Urban Dictionary. But the point is, there’s usually one simple, concise definition.
That isn’t the case with the confusing AF term "cuck." If you haven't been hiding under a legit rock the last few years, you might have seen the term thrown around as an insult by angry white moms and old men in ‘MAGA’ hats, or perhaps you spotted it as a category on your go-to porn site.
Either way, what TF does it mean in all different contexts? We asked experts and found out pretty much everything and anything there is to know about the term and its many uses. YOU’RE WELCOME.
The old-school definition.
There’s some debate over the word "cuck," and how it came to fruition. According to Robert Frank, PhD, a professor at and the chair of the linguistics department at Yale, the term started off as a shortening of the longer term ‘cuckold,’ which used to define a man whose wife was having an affair.
That being said, Laurence Horn, PhD, professor emeritus of linguistics at Yale, adds that the way the term is used now more closely mirrors the meaning of the word "wittol." While "cuckold" was originally used by people in Shakespearean or earlier Renaissance times to describe a man who didn’t know his wife was cheating on him, a "wittol" actually knows his wife is being unfaithful. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a "wittol," is defined as "a man who is aware of and complaisant about the infidelity of his wife; a contented cuckold."
The current ~sexy~ definition.
Whether or not you heard about it in the political sense, there's a chance you may have come across the term "cuck" on your most recent visit to PornHub. Why? Well, "cuck" has taken on a sexual identity since it was first used back in the Renaissance.
"Typically on 'adult' sites, a cuck(old) refers to a man who didn’t mind, and in many cases actively encourages, his wife or lover's participation in extramarital sex—and seeks out and relishes the humiliation," says Horn. He adds that the humiliation is often "metaphorically represented by horns or jackasses' ears on the cuckold’s head."
In addition to enjoying watching his partner have sex with other people, sexpert >Kryss Shane notes that "a cuck/cuckold is a male or male-identified person who is the subordinate to their partner."
The current political definition.
Cuck is often used by conservatives to insult liberal men for being weak or effeminate. But there's a variation of the term they also reserve for fellow conservatives who support certain liberal ideologies.
Cue the cuckservative. What the eff is that? Well, Horn explains a cuckservative is a conservative who welcomes or is at least complicit in his liberal 'enemy's' violation of his supposed sacrosanct political ideals and willingly accepts the humiliation therefrom." In other words, he’s the guy who, for example, voted for Trump but annoys supreme right-wing conservatives by also openly supporting Planned Parenthood.
The term "cuck," specifically, refers to men. That being said, Horn says there's a less popular term, "cuckquean," that refers to a female cuck.
What sort of guy enjoys being a cuck?
"Often, it's someone who is in control within other parts of their life," says Shane. "As a result, there is a pleasure that comes with following the orders of another person."
"In other situations, a cuck is someone with sexual fantasies that they do not feel are socially acceptable," she continues. "They seek out the opportunity to be a cuck so that they can live out their fantasies, while being able to tell themselves that this is simply following orders. Thus, they cannot be held responsible for what this might say about their sexuality or gender identity."
Why women use it as an insult.
In general, using the term 'cuck' as an insult, says a lot more about the person saying it than the person they're saying it to.
For example, when women use the word 'cuck' as an insult, it's usually a reflection of their own baggage. "Women who refer to men as a cuck have most likely been abused, controlled, or dominated by a father or mother figure who misused their power to make the woman feel weak, inadequate," says intimacy expert >Allana Pratt.
“Her parents may have valued her grades or sports achievements, of which she failed in their eyes, so her unresolved trauma is being projected onto the man she’s calling a cuck" says Pratt. So, she essentially closes her heart and rejects men… all while rejecting this aspect of herself too.
Why men use it as an insult.
When men use the term to insult other men, it’s a pretty obvious form of social climbing says Lucio Buffalmano, a psychologist, social skills coach, and founder of >The Power Moves. "With the word 'cuck' they are trying to portray themselves as stronger, cooler, and more 'alpha male,'" he explains.
By using the term as an insult, they’re trying to pin the other dude as weak and label themselves as strong. Needless to say, that’s all a giant load of BS. Buffalmano notes that dudes who try to social climb by using this term are really just doing so to mask their own insecurities surrounding their masculinity.
Why people in general use it as an insult.
Whether it's a man or a woman using the term as an insult, it always indicates that the person is letting pretty dated gender norms shape their vision of the world. “When using the term cuck to insult a man, it is following the gender norms that men are supposed to be stronger than women and emasculating the man by calling him a name that indicates an inability to be in control or to handle his own life,” says Shane. “As cuck has deeper connotations about struggling with self-identity, this is considered a much bigger insult than other words used to undermine a man.”
I told you it was more complicated than a simple Merriam-Webster definition. But, luckily, now you know pretty much everything and anything there is to know about the otherwise super complex term.
